After such a promising start, I had high hopes for the sequel, but although Thorns does everything a sequel is supposed to do, it unfortunately still comes up short. ![]() Distinctly memorable setting, tough yet conflicted heroine, excellent pacing all around, I said. When first starting it, I knew it was about a blind girl, but I was still so unprepared for what that meant what it meant for a girl Emma’s age what it would mean for any of us, given the circumstances and what it means for YA literature. It never really hit me how diverse a book like Blind is. Fifteen and blind, Emma has to untangle what happened and why-in order to see for herself what makes life worth living. Slade turned into a writer when he decided to make the jump to doing it full time. He spent a few years working in radio but as a copy writer for a Saskatoon radio station. He did this for several months, ultimately getting another job this time in radio. The author would also spend some time working at a hotel as an auditor at night. He did have some early publication success, however, with a short story that was published and came out in 1989. ![]() ![]() That of course would translate and help contribute to his career later as an author of fiction. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan located in Saskatoon in 1989 with his degree in the field of English with honors. Slade would go on to attend higher education. While he polished his creative expression during the high school years, he would end up working on the craft further when he went to college.
